Diabetes and pre-diabetes – call for preventive action
Topic details
More than 1,000 Bialystok residents were surveyed as part of the Bialystok PLUS population-based study. Medical history data indicated that 75 patients had diabetes mellitus, representing 7.14% of the study population. On the basis of laboratory tests, we found that pre-diabetic status was present in 410 individuals (approximately 40%). We identified a population group without abnormal glucose metabolism, which accounted for 47.1% (n = 495). Participants with abnormal fasting glucose (IFG) accounted for 22.93% (n = 241) and those with abnormal glucose tolerance (IGT) for 6.1% (n = 169). Among these patients, we detected 104 patients with both IGT and IFG (25.37% of all prediabetics). Furthermore, we showed that 6.76% (n = 71) were diagnosed with diabetes for the first time in our study after performing an oral glucose load test (OGTT). Of this group, 62% (n = 44) had a fasting glucose below 126 mg/dl, suggesting that the OGTT should be performed routinely for the diagnosis of glucose metabolism disorders. As many as 146 (13.8%) of the total study population were found to have diabetes.
